Pros and Cons of Regular VS Pleated Air Filters

April 28, 2021

There are many different types of air filtration systems. Depending on your specific applications and MERV requirements, you will have a wide variety of types and shapes to choose from. One of the more popular types of filters is the pleated air filter, known for its increased ability to filter out more particulates, with higher MERV ratings and a filter design that is stricter with airflow.

In today’s blog, we will be going over the pros and cons of pleated air filters compared to non-pleated ones.

Pleated Air Filters

You should go for pleated air filters if you require higher efficiency levels in your filtration. They target dust, mold, pet dander, pollen, and even bacteria, which is crucial for many different industries during these times when essential businesses have to continue to operate amidst a pandemic. They are typically made from a unique synthetic wire material that has been folded into pleats to further restrict the passage of airborne particulates. Their MERV ratings generally range from five to 12.

While pleated air filters can help you avoid allergies, filter out harmful bacteria and viruses, and promote cleaner air overall, their restrictive nature can make for airflow issues. If your facility contains individuals who suffer from respiratory issues, make sure to consult with experts before deciding on a pleated air filter.

Non-Pleated Air Filters

Regular or non-pleated air filters are a perfectly suitable choice for facilities with a lower need for filtration. They are perfectly effective at filtering out bigger air contaminants. They are also less expensive and you can always add fiberglass reinforcements to provide them with extra durability. Despite their lower efficiency, they can perfectly contribute to the air quality of your facility and boost the capabilities of your HVAC systems.

Generally, the takeaway should be that your applications determine your requirements. Both types of filters are good solutions, but getting a filter that does not have a high enough MERV rating or that restricts airflow too much can be disastrous for your operations, so make sure to consult with experts like Dynamic Filtration to learn about your options better.
