Pleated Air Filters and More: Choosing the Right Filter

August 23, 2021

When it comes to choosing the right air filter for your home, office, or warehouse, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. First things first, you will need to make sure that you are familiar with all the different kinds of filters and their functions and benefits. How is a pleated air filter different from a fiberglass filter? Should you go for a cleanable air filter or a replaceable one?

In today’s blog, we will be discussing the differences among the various filter types, such as pleated air filters, and more.

When going through the list of filter types here, bear in mind your requirements for MERV ratings and air flow. Let those two principles be your main guiding criteria for which filter type to go for.

1. Fiberglass Air Filter

This type of filter is designed with fiberglass fibers layered on top of one another. This layering is what provides filtration. The layers are fixed with a metal grating for support and structure. This type of filter does not provide intensive filtration capabilities, but is often adequate for light-duty operations. It is a disposable filter and is meant to be replaced often.

2. Pleated Air Filter

This kind of filter is highly popular for its increased filtration capabilities. Instead of only utilizing layers, pleated air filters are composed of a polyester or cotton material that has been pleated. These pleats increase the total filterable surface area, thus being able to trap and hold more particulates.

3. Cleanable Air Filter

The opposite of a disposable air filter, this type of filter does not need to be replaced often but instead maintained often. Failure to properly maintain this kind of filter can lead to costly machine breakdowns and potentially other hazards.

4. HEPA Air Filter

HEPA is short for high-efficiency particulate arrestance. This type of filter provides the most intense filtration capabilities due to their ability to trap particles that are smaller than 0.3 microns. They are used in environments where pristine air quality is a must, such as hospitals.
