Fibreglass Vs. Pleated Air Filters

June 22, 2021

If you are caught up on what type of filter to choose for your HVAC or home furnace, you can rest easy as there are only really two types of filters that are suitable: fibreglass and pleated air filters. The most important factors you have to consider include the price of the filter, its MERV rating, its quality, and the frequency of changing or replacing it. Once you have finally decided on these things, you can then move onto the next step of choosing between fibreglass and pleated air filters.

Here’s everything you need to know about fibreglass vs. pleated air filters:

The Pros and Cons of Fiberglass Air Filters

In terms of advantages, fibreglass filters are inexpensive. Moreover, they are capable of capturing bigger debris such as lint and dust. Finally, when it comes to airflow, newly installed filters will not impede it. However, without regularly changing or replacing the filters, it can clog airflow and cause problems.

In terms of drawbacks, fibreglass air filters need to be changed every 30 days and they are not recyclable and have to be disposed of to the landfill. Compared to pleated air filters, fibreglass has less filtration capabilities since they don’t have a large surface area to catch air contaminants.

The Pros and Cons of Pleated Air Filters

On the other hand, pleated air filters are capable of capturing smaller and more debris than fibreglass. In fact, they can trap pollen, bacteria, and even viruses, depending on the specific MERV rating. Also, they don’t have to be replaced frequently and can be used for up to 90 days long. Best of all, they can be recycled in your local community’s recycling facility, if you have one.

However, the biggest drawback of pleated air filters is their price because they cost more than fibreglass. However, the benefits of having to change them less often compensates for the price as well as the energy savings you can enjoy from its high filtration efficiency.
