Cleanable air filters are an excellent alternative to disposable filters due to their reusability. Many cleanable air filters are used as inlet filters, making sure sensitive equipment is free from dust and other contaminants. However, an important factor to consider with these filters, or any industrial filters in general, is differential pressure. What exactly is differential pressure, and why is it important to know this metric? This blog explores these questions in detail.

What Is Differential Pressure?

Differential pressure, also known as pressure differential or DP, is the difference in pressure between the inlet and the outlet of an industrial filter. In other words, it's the difference in air pressure as it enters and exits the filter, respectively.

Differential pressure changes occur as the cleanable air filter is in use. When it is new and relatively clean, the differential pressure is low. Conversely, when it is relatively used and contaminated, the differential is high. This occurs because of the slow accumulation of contaminants in the filter, forcing the air to flow past them, creating a drop in pressure at the exit.

Importance Of Differential Pressure

Differential pressure is an important metric to monitor due to the following reasons:

- Filter Condition: Differential pressure is a good metric to judge the condition of the filter, as higher DP indicates more contamination or clogging.

- Filter Efficiency: Differential pressure can also gauge how well an industrial filter is operating. For instance, if it is too high, it is safe to guess that the airflow is restricted, leading to a reduction in efficiency.

- Premature Blockage: While some increase in DP is to be expected, if the differential is too high prematurely, then it can indicate a major blockage that needs to be cleaned or addressed immediately.
