4 Things To Know About Cleanable Air Filters

March 21, 2022

When it comes to industrial air filters, there are plenty of varieties in the market. One such type is the cleanable air filter, which, as the name suggests, can be washed and reused. While they are used in many applications, some also use them in HVAC systems. However, using different kinds of air filters in the HVAC system will have very different outputs. Thus, if you are considering cleanable air filters for your HVAC systems, then you need to keep these 4 things in mind.

Properties of Cleanable Air Filters

MERV Rating

MERV rating can be defined as the capability of a filter to remove contaminants from the air. It falls on the scale of about 1-15, with 1 being barely functional and 15 being an extremely high-quality filter. On this scale, washable air filters generally have a MERV rating of only 1-4, hence they can only filter out large contaminants like pollen, lint and particles that are bigger than 10 microns. Hence, if you are looking for quality, you might need to rethink your filtration system.

Maintenance

Since these filters are reusable, they also need to be maintained regularly in order to extend their lifespan. Washable air filters must be cleaned at least once a month and must be dried out completely before being inserted into the system. Disposable filters, on the other hand, can be simply thrown away once they have been choked up with significant dust and debris.

Performance

There is a major pro and con with cleanable air filters in terms of performance. Starting with the con, since the filter’s MERV rating is so low, it is bound to accumulate dust and contaminants over time, in spite of regular cleaning. Thus, its performance will reduce even further. However, the time span is long enough that users can benefit from reusing this filter, for it can perform for 5 to 10 years.

Economic Viability

These filters are usually more expensive than disposable filters. However, the initial cost is easily offset by its long lifespan, since it can almost last a decade. Disposable filters, on the other hand, need to be changed every 6 months.

Thus, before you consider a cleanable air filter for your HVAC system, do keep these factors in mind.
